Microsoft to fix ASP.net bug
CIOL
Microsoft will on Tuesday fix for a Windows Web server flaw that is starting to be exploited by online attackers. The patch fixes a bug in the Windows ASP.net technology used in Microsoft's servers. Microsoft says it's seen "limited" exploitation of the flaw in online attacks, but the problem is serious enough that the company has decided to rush out a fix ahead of its next regular patch update, scheduled for Oct. 12. ASP.net is used to build Web applications, and the bug gives attackers a way to gain access to protected files or read encrypted data sent by an ASP.net application server.

Nandan, numbers & national identity
Business Standard
It's 14 months since Nilekani, now 55, decided to trade the life of a successful techie chieftain for official Delhi, a minefield for any interloper who dares to intrude. Between then and now, Nilekani has built a core team of less than 200 people, spent less than Rs 100 crore, and is ready to roll out what is the world's most ambitious identity programme. The modest budget and the tight execution invite comparison with another project about to roll out in Delhi. The roll-out will spread to seven states in a month or two, and by March-end several million numbers would have been issued. Firms like MindTree, Accenture, Cisco and others have been selected to develop the software, handle the biometrics, do the connectivity. A contact centre has been roped in, so has the post office. And a couple of hundred agencies are being empanelled to enroll on behalf of registrars, like state governments and banks.

Driving the private cloud
InformationWeek India
Two major trends will drive the future of private cloud. Seamless on/off premise integration and datacenter in a box will drive private cloud going forward, said Pallavi Kathuria, Director, Server Business, Microsoft India, at Interop 2010 held in Mumbai today. Kathuria described cloud computing as a software, application platform or infrastructure delivered via Internet technologies in a pay-per-0use or self service model. Private cloud is a cloud offered within the firewall of the organization and is the third phase of an organization's typical journey to the cloud. The typical journey to the cloud includes traditional data centre, virtualized data centre, private cloud and public cloud.

I can build an institution different from Bill Gates: Shiv Nadar
Economic Times
Shiv Nadar, founder of HCL and chairman HCL Technologies, has taken a back seat, literally. When time permits, he pulls out one of the 4,000 movies in his personal DVD collection. Favourites include Yaadon ki Baaraat and The Godfather. Bridge, another pastime, has taken a back seat, as he has been catching up with a lot of cricket in between his trips to Beijing for the Olympics and to South Africa for the soccer World Cup. He has pulled out of the daily business grind, but still keeps a hawk's eye on how the technology landscape is changing. And yet, he does not allow any of this to come in the way of his philanthropic work. In an interview with ET bureau, Mr Nadar says he now spends 40% of his time in social ventures.

Network Security: How to Defend an Infinitely Expanding Frontier

Wave

This paper will outline perhaps the most powerful, cost-effective and simple solution for bringing the scattered end-points of today's mobile networks back under the umbrella of a strong centralized network security architecture. It is built on three widely available, proven, but poorly understood technologies: Trusted Platform Modules, Self-Encrypting Hard Drives and centralized (or remote) security management. This paper will not only help readers distinguish myth from fact about these technologies but will also build a strong case for how their combined application can re-establish network security as an enforceable corporate policy, rather than a strategy.
